STOCKTAKING – COUNT THE BENEFITS, NOT THE COST

Stocktake is never anyone’s favourite time of the year.  Whether it’s sorting shoes, counting cans or stacking shelves, stocktaking can stretch people’s patience to the limit.

The one bit of good news is that stocktake is always at the same time of the year – so no surprises there.  This means that organisations have ample time to get organised prior to stocktake to ensure that the process is as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Making a booking for the hiring of equipment such as trolleys, forklifts, pallets and pallet trucks etc will ensure that the systems are in place when the time comes.  There are numerous advantages of using specialised equipment from professional equipment rental firms such as streamlined processes, reduced cost of labour and improved productivity.

By way of example, equipment hire could include a ‘cherry picker’ (hydraulic platform trolley) or a portalift – which can be easily operated by a single person.   Another piece of equipment that is popular at stocktake time is the forklift work platform which can quickly and safely elevate more than one person up to the area where the stock needs to be accessed.

As an example of how equipment rental can assist with stocktaking, think about this news from a leading retailer in Australia, Big W, which reported that their bi-annual stocktake which usually took two days to complete, had been reduced by half a day following the hire of 25 forklift work platforms.

Prior to deciding on an equipment rental organisation however, it’s always best to do some checks and balances first to ensure they comply with safety and regulatory requirements, offer a comprehensive maintenance and repair service and have an established track record of service delivery.

In the retail environment, some stocktaking responsibilities are outsourced to third parties and temporary contractors.  Reliable results are always required with stocktakes and this has led to the development of an industry that provides specialised stock management software and solutions including hand-held barcode terminals.  This barcode scanning equipment can also be hired on a short-term basis, with professionals providing training to on-site staff on how to operate and use the systems to ensure reliability.

Equipment rental need not be confined to stocktake time . The equipment rental industry is big business, with all manner of vehicles, machinery and equipment available for long or short-term rentals to organisations across all sectors of industry.  From earthmoving hire, truck hire, mining machines and excavators to bar code scanners, forklifts for stocktakes and lawnmowers for the man in the street, the equipment rental industry has machinery for any job – and that’s why it’s an industry that’s on the rise.
